Exercising is hard; hard to do, and even harder to stick with. Recently, we discussed the benefits of exercising with a partner. Today, we’re going to explain the benefits of working out in a group. Many of the benefits of a partner can also translate to a group environment. Benefits like accountability, competition and others can come with a group just like with a partner. However, a group dynamic has a few additional characteristics that are different than a one on one setting. So take note of some of the major advantages of working out in a group.
Encouragement of a team.
Unlike having one partner, now you have several. This can sound intimidating, but this means that, like a baseball team with a best hitter & fastest runner, there’s a strongest & fastest exerciser as well. Moreover, the one on one environment can feel like you’re being coached, bossed, or pushed around too much. This environment can also make you feel really defeated if your partner is fitter than you. The good thing is that a group isn’t just one person, many people with different minds and ways of thinking. A group will also have a variety of exercisers with different goals, & struggles. With a larger variety of workout friends, you’re more likely to find one that you jive with.
Help in more ways than one.
When one on one, there’s just a single person trying to help and/or teach. A group can offer different viewpoints that can make learning easier. Regardless of your struggle, the larger the group, the larger the chance someone else went through it before. This allows you to gain great first-hand experience for a wider array of challenges you might face. Not only this, but the more people there are in the group, the more ways you have to learn. For instance, so often people in a group will discuss what strategy specifically helped them. You’ll hear the phrase “what helped me was..”. This is meaningful because what helps one person doesn’t necessarily help the next. So compared to one partner helping you with a struggle, you can have various solutions, suggestions & strategies, one of which is surely to make a difference!
All in all, the benefits of working out in a group can help you feel comfortable, secure, safe and help you progress faster. Trying out a group environment can provide valuable benefits, even if you’re already doing well on your own. If nothing else, you stand to gain great ideas & tips that can elevate your own training program.
